Abstract
In 1990 Perona and Malik proposed a diffusion equation based method to restore distorted pictures by eliminating small disturbances and simultaneously
enhancing sharp edges. Numerical experiments with this technique give extraordinarily good results, although the underlying equation is ill-posed and no mathematical justification is known.
In this conference, we give a brief survey of image processing by diffusion methods and present a mathematical sound regularization of the Perona-Malik equation which produces equally good numerical results. We shall be rather non-technical and direct our talk to a non-specialized
audience.
