Join us to celebrate Dr. Lopez’s life and achievements this coming Monday March 14 from 4:00-6:00PM at the “Torre”.
Dr. Jorge López Fernández worked for more than 40 years in the Mathematics Department of the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. He contributed to its development both as a professor of calculus and analysis and as a director for eight years. He also contributed to improving Mathematics Education in Puerto Rico. One of the greatest contributions was the creation of the Regional Centers for Mathematics Training and Instruction (CRAIM) dedicated to the professional development of teachers. From CRAIM, Dr. López hired the best resources available for the training of math teachers and the editing and publication of educational books and materials for the Puerto Rico Department of Education. Dr. López established contacts at the international level and introduced experts from the United States, Spain and the Netherlands to Puerto Rico. He also presented Mathematics in Context (MeC-PR) based on the principles of Realistic Mathematics Education (RME), a theory originated in the Netherlands by Hans Freudenthal and developed by his followers at the Institute that bears his name.
Dr. López Fernández loved the university and we consider it a well-deserved tribute for his dedication to the students and his alma mater.Omar Hernández Rodríguez, EdD
