Abstract
A quantum computer is a (theoretical) quantum information processing device. It is based on the idea of using quantum physical systems to transmit and process information. Freedman and Kitaev proposed and promoted a model for quantum computation that uses two-dimensional quasi-particles, so-called anyons. This is intimately related to Jones' braid group representation arising from subfactors. I will explain some of the ideas behind the Freedman/Kitaev model of topological quantum computing and their connections to structures arising in subfactor theory. This will be an introductory and elementary talk.
