p-adic valuations of interesting sequences, Victor H. Moll, Tulane University, Wed, 13 April, 2011, 10:00 a.m. C-356
Abstract
For a prime p, the p-adic valuation of a number is the highest power of p that divides x. This allows to measure the size of a number and leads to completions of Q other than R.
Interesting patterns of p-adic valuations for classical sequences have been considered in recent years. These include factorials, Stirling numbers, Catalan numbers and ASM numbers (these count the number of Alternating
Sing Matrices).
The talk will include background on this topic as well as several open questions. A special effort has been made to make the presentation it accessible to a general mathematical audience.
