I will discuss K-theory of a class of C*- algebras naturally arising from geometry and topology, its connection to geometric group theory, and its applications to problems in differential geometry and topology.

In particular, I will discuss my recent work with Kasparov on the Novikov higher signature conjecture and related open questions. I will make an effort for these lectures to be accessible to graduate students.
