We investigate the following problem from digital communications: find a square space-time code that is well adapted both to maxima likelihood and iterative decoding. We reformulate the problem in a more mathematical and intrinsic way, and then give the optimal so;ution in the 2X2 dimensional case using different tools, among which mainly the arithmetic theory of quarternion algebras.
