Bimodules, planarity and freeness,   Dr. Dietmar Bisch,   Vanderbilt University, China,  , 19 February, 2009,   10:00 a.m. C-356

Symmetries of von Neumann algebras are naturally captured by certain bimodules. They form fusion categories whose intertwiner spaces carry an action of Jones' planar operad. This gives rise to many suprising algebraic-combinatorial structures, including a new notion of free product that Vaughan Jones and I discovered in recent joint work.

I will explain these concepts and present some examples. The talk will be accessible to graduate students and non-experts.
